These days it’s tough for me to find any R&B that I really like. It feels like a huge amount of it is very samey, and quite repetitive. However, the last few days I’ve had Wicked Games by The Weeknd stuck in my head. This song is part of a great release called House of Balloons, which is available to download for free on The Weeknd’s website.
I really like this song firstly because of the lyrics. There’s so much more than the usual “I love you I need you” kind of thing that we hear all the time today. This coupled with a backing containing an ambient guitar part and an unusual beat makes for a great listen. The Weeknd have really succeeded (in my opinion) in carving out a sound that they can call their own, and for that, they should be congratulated!
