Gente Ordinaria – Aloe Blacc

Frankly, Ordinary People is one of my favourite songs of all time. I absolutely despise hearing it butchered, and would fight tooth and nail to back it as one of the most heartbreaking songs ever. And yet, I’m very ready to listen to Aloe Blacc’s take on the whole affair. In Spanish. Say whaaaat?

So we should all know the tale of Ordinary People by now. John Legend pours his heart out about the trials and tribulations of a relationship. Love can come and go, there’s just no certainty there. Backed by a piano, he manages to tug at my heartstrings every time, and he deservedly earned the Grammy for his efforts. So what makes Aloe Blacc’s effort that little bit different, and not just another clone?

Well obviously, it’s in Spanish. But this brings along not just a total miscomprehension on my part. There’s a horn accompaniment, and the whole song just sounds a bit livelier. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two artists’ voices as they’re both so good, but I would say that this is overall just a slightly more fun version. John Legend makes me want to just hug him and tell him it’ll all be ok, Aloe Blacc’s version makes me want to jump up and salsa with my chicita. Anyway, dance away my friends, with the song below.
