What We’re Listening To: Edition 27

New year, new tunes (on repeat).

New year, new tunes (on repeat).

Yo, listen up to what we’ve been lapping up. God, that was awful:

Elliot : Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out – Mayer Hawthorne

Sometimes, you just want to kick it to a bit of funky jazz style tunes. And sometimes you want these tunes to resonate from the coolest of cats’ mouth. Well then, let Mayer Hawthorne step it. The New York funkster (a word?) returns with another easy going, vibing number where he casually tells a girl it’s all over. Nice.

Henry: Summit – Skrillex ft. Ellie Goulding

Dubstep! Party! Seriously, one of the best things Skrillex has ever produced. Enjoy responsibly.

Ammar: Eyesdown – Bonobo (Machinedrum Remix)

A lot of people have been very excited recently about the return of electro-jazz-trip-ambient specialist Bonobo with the release of the great slow-burner ‘Cirrus’. The release got me rooting through his back catalogue and I stumbled on the commercially overlooked Black Sands Remixed album (one for the hipsters). There are some great remixes on there from some talented producers such as Cosmin TRG, Falty DL and Lapalux, but the Machinedrum rework of ‘Eyesdown’ stands out for me. To start with, he’s chosen one of the best tracks from the record to work with, taking Bonobo’s accompaniment to Andreya Triana’a sultry vocals and then adding at least three layers of bleeping beats, turning a rolling groove into a full on rave. Perfect for your Friday night.

Michael: You & I – Medina (Deadmau5 Remix)

Light female vocals + banging Deadmau5 beat = one hell of a pop song.
