Stars – fun.

17 May

serious.

I just can’t get enough of this band. I’ve been banned from playing them in art class – fair enough as I control the speaker – so I’ve taken to the site to sing their praises. Some Nights has a magical quality; it creates poignant, touching moments in time as well as speaking to a much greater scope. It perfectly merges the sublime with the mundane on both a personal and generalised level. It’s practically perfect in every single way. Listen to it. Love it. Put it on your end-of-year lists:

When The Night Falls – Chromeo

16 May

I was a big fan of  . . . Fancy Footwork (it took me a while to remember the actual song there) so I was pretty pumped to see that Chromeo had a new video out. The song’s pretty fantastic and I await any and all remixes come July. Take a listen/watch after the jump:

How We Do (Party) – Rita Ora

15 May

Wall Hugger: Rita Ora

As well as Dream Pop, summer offers up plenty of choice pop anthems. That’s not a complaint; you just need them. When it’s hot and you’re bothered, you need things that are easier to remember. It’s like the law of physics of something. Lucky thing we have recent UK chart-topper Rita Ora for assistance:

Lazuli – Beach House

14 May

In Bloom: Beach House

So. Much. Work. But that’s boring. What’s not boring: Beach House’s new album. Teen Dream was an alternate soundtrack for my summer last year and it’s coincidenceville that they’ve released Bloom in time for this vacation. Huzzahs all round:

A Payphone Remix For Your Saturday

12 May

Maroon 5′s Plan For Your Saturday

I’m a huge, huge fan of Maroon 5 (some evidence) and super duper excited for their new album. Overexposed is released next month (I think. . .) and it’s likely that it’ll be played again (and again and again) on my iPod this summer. Here’s the video for their new single, Payphone (there are EXPLOSIONS):

Fun remix after the jump:

Get Up – Carousel

12 May

Carousel: Not actually on one.

We blogged Where Have You Been by Carousel a while back and that was infectiously happy. This is just as good. And the absolute perfect song for your Saturday morning.

Here’s the song:

Loft Music – The Weeknd

9 May

I have a really exciting post for you guys tomorrow. Not that this is a post about which I’m not excited; I’m just a little time-pressed. So let’s speed this along:

Shake It Out – Glee Cast

8 May

This is how it went down.

I really like Florence +/&/and The Machine but I don’t think I ever really talk about her all that much on the website. I don’t quite know why that is, so here’s a list of other artists I really enjoy but talk about all that much: Snoop Dogg, Hanson and Taylor Swift. Anyway, one of my favourite Florence songs was covered on Glee this week! Pretty exciting. Even better is that it was a beautiful arrangement and featured Tina! Tina never gets songs! Glory, glory, glory. There’s a seriously spoilery musician in the background between Santana and Tina whose smile almost steals this song:

Full, unedited song after the jump (but minus Santana- sad face):

The Problem With Calling One Direction Gay

7 May

One Direction: More successful than you. But not gay, yet.

Last week, I was trawling my Facebook homepage to see what I was missing out on and apparently my life lacks casual homophobia, sexism and partying. Hot damn, my life pales in comparison. Anyway, one girl had posted a parody of One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful (she’s a fan) on a friend’s wall, proclaiming its greatness. And look, when I watched it for the first time I laughed. But then I realised at what I was laughing and realised it was actually pretty shady. And not the kind of shady that can be fixed by an nonchalant ‘it’s only a joke,’ in the same way that calling someone a racial slur can’t be ameliorated by a ‘only joking, bro.’ It highlighted a casual homophobia that is so intermixed with reaction to popular culture and music that it’s become au fait. Read on after the jump. Or don’t. Whatevs, UR so gay:

The Voice UK: Good Luck – Becky Hill

6 May

Always handy with a microphone. Seriously.

Well, jeez: I guess I really like what Michael and I did, too. Michael chose David Julien (East London’s answer to Matt Cardle) as his pick of the week. He was great but my favourite of the competition, Becky Hill performed just after him (I think – the show’s a disorientating blur of red, umbrellas and Reggie Yates). She killed it a fortnight ago with Irreplaceable and her ‘Good Luck’ – a pretty difficult song to cover – was awesome. Watch after the jump:
