All answers from Jarrod Taylor, lead singer and lyricist.
I read a poem with the word in college. I’ve since forgot the poem. I just love the word, such a disgusting sounding word with a lovely definition.
How long have you been making music for?
This unit since 2009, but all of us since we were young boys.
Who have been your biggest musical influences?
Everyone has a different answer, but when we are together in the van we listen to the only cassette tape we have…REM – Monster. Love that record. With our cassette tape hook up everyone DJ’s and theres lots of stuff flying around. REM, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, The Smiths, Jeff Buckley, Depeche Mode, Bjork, that stuff got us really excited about music when we were kids.
Where did you all meet?
I met Jeff and Stephen in high school. Each in a different gym class. John and Greg were met from other local bands. We certainly gravitated towards one another and our shared humor. We think alike in many ways.
What’s your favourite track off the new album?
It was built to go together and that makes it hard to pick only one. If forced I
would say Kicking Up The Dirt, those words are the best I’ve done.
When can people next see you on stage?
Next Tuesday in San Francisco (June 5), then we’ll be off all month to prepare for our CD Release show at Slims in San Francisco on July 14th. We are desperately hoping to get to the UK, we just need someone to start playing our record over there!
What’s your best on tour story?
I can’t think of just one! Here are few fun situations we’ve had. We played with a hatecore band in Arizona. Drove our broken van going 40 MPH for 24 hours. Showered with several gym students at a college in El Paso. Helped break up a massive fight between an audience and the venue staff in Utah. Crashed a college graduation party in New Jersey. Stephen won $50.00 from a nickel machine on our way to Memphis. We were able to get everyone sufficiently drunk buying cheap 40 ounce beers on Beale St. with that money.
What’s your favourite song, past or present?
Climbing Up The Walls – Radiohead
My wife and my two cats.
What’s the best moment you’ve had so far as a group?
Being together is always really nice. It’s hard to pin one down. When we get together there is a lot of laughter nowadays, things used to be much more guarded and difficult. We are friends and friends go through a lot together. Coupled with being in a band, the relationships are pretty intense, but I think we just enjoy playing and working together.
Where did you see yourselves in five years time?
No idea. Thank you for talking with us!
